The season for riding your motorcycle is winding down as the weather cools, but it’s not over yet. While you get in the last few rides, don’t forget about the effect riding a motorcycle can have on your hearing.

What Causes Hearing Loss in Motorcyclists?

Motorcycle engines are loud, but you may be surprised to learn that the real danger to hearing isn’t the engine, but the wind noise. Regulations and advancements in technology have successfully brought down excess motorcycle noise so they are no longer louder than cars.

Any exposure to loud noise can damage hearing—whether it’s prolonged exposure or a sudden sound. Hearing loss caused by loud noise exposure is called noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), and it’s estimated that 40 million adults have some level of NIHL. Sounds over 85 decibels (dB) are loud enough to damage hearing, and the noise generated by the wind under your motorcycle helmet can reach 90 decibels at just 40 miles per hour.

This can often come down to the type of helmet you are wearing. The helmet alone does not provide adequate hearing protection.  Wind noise is generated by turbulent airflow around and under the helmet, like a rock in the middle of a fast river: the water swirls around the rock and makes the classic sound of rushing water.

How Can You Protect Your Hearing While Riding?

NIHL is permanent once the damage is done, but it’s also preventable. Disposable foam earplugs are inexpensive and can quiet up to 25 dB of sound, which can make a huge difference. There are also specialized earplugs available designed specifically for motorcyclists to deal with wind noise. Wear some form of hearing protection whenever you ride, even if it’s just a short jaunt to the grocery store; it’s easy to do and will protect your hearing.

As stated, NIHL is not reversible, so take care of your hearing. If you suspect you’re in the beginning stages of NIHL, or you want to be proactive in taking care of your hearing health, contact an audiologist to get a hearing test and discuss hearing protection strategies.
