Medical Assistant/Allergy Technician

Allergy Related Duties (approximately 80% of time; may vary based upon volume and practice needs):

• Mix and accurately prepare allergy vials for injections. 

• Administer allergy injections. 

• Test and treat patients for allergy- related problems in a caring manner.

• Use Allergy Edge to document allergy injections, allergy tests and mixing of patient vials.

• Be current in all pertinent laboratory tests regarding allergies, be able to draw blood, know lab paperwork and protocol.

• Use universal safety precautions as necessary, self-protection, disposal etc.

• Know allergic responses and protocol (emergency drugs, asthma drugs etc.)

• Assist physicians and physician assistants as needed to ensure good patient flow.

• When needed, assist front office staff in scheduling allergy patients.  Schedule should result in efficient patient flow and high patient satisfaction.

• Responsible for accurately maintaining allergy supplies and inventories in a timely manner.

•    Responsible for weekly maintenance of allergy testing equipment  

• Performs other related allergy duties as required.

Patient Care Duties (approximately 20% of time; may vary based upon volume and practice needs):

• Screens telephone calls for allergy department. Takes accurate clinical messages within the limits of knowledge and practice policy.  May answer patient’s inquiries with respect to medical questions within the limits of knowledge and practice policy.

• Ensures that all equipment in the exam room is clean and properly set up prior to each patient encounter.

• Ensures solutions are adequate.

• Cleans and restocks rooms for the day’s use.

• Reviews patients’ chart for the day’s visit.

• Maintains emergency cart.

Scheduling and Administrative Duties:

• Call patients prior to appointment to review medications and instructions for allergy test and RAST etc

• Accurately chart patient allergy injections, allergy test, mixing of allergy extract, PFT and FeNo in Nextgen to charge patient.

• Document telephone calls accurately in medical chart.

• Maintain strict confidentiality.

• Performs other duties as required.

Position Requirements:

• High school education or G.E.D. equivalent.  Completion of a two-year program for medical assistant (prefer Certified Medical Assistant).

• Three years’ prior experience in medical practice is preferred.

• One year of allergy technician experience is preferred.

• Possesses the sense of discipline to work in accordance with accepted clinical standards.

• Comply with all regulatory requirements including OSHA, CLIA and maintenance of clinical skills and certifications, etc.

• Be capable of dealing tactfully and effectively with patients, family members, other employees, and physicians.

• Accurate computer scheduling skills.
