We’re halfway through November, and the holiday season is approaching fast! If you’re planning on hosting a holiday get-together in your home, you’ve probably been preoccupied with planning the menu, the schedule and the décor, among other logistical concerns. Don’t forget to factor potential allergies into your plans.
Communicate with Guests
The first thing you want to know is what you’re dealing with. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 20% of U.S. adults have some allergy; chances are, someone on your guest list has an allergy. Ask everyone coming to your home if they have allergies and what they’re allergic to. Don’t stop at food allergies either: ask about allergies to mold, pet dander, dust or other possible allergens.
Prepare the House
When tidying up, pay close attention to common allergens, specifically dust, mold and pet dander (if you have pets).
Dust
Dust is easily kicked up while cleaning. Even dusting can send a flurry of dust particles into the air rather than capturing them cleanly on the duster. Dust efficiently by working from high to low, ensuring you catch much of the dust you send airborne later in the process. Additionally, use a vacuum instead of a broom and a damp cloth instead of a dry one. We especially recommend microfiber.
Mold
Mold can appear in any area with dampness. Check the bathroom, houseplants, pipes or anywhere else that moisture can occur. If you find any mold, follow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s guide on mold cleanup.
Pet Dander
If one of your guests is allergic to animal dander, make a plan for your furry friend during the event. Either keep them in another area of the house where they’ll still have plenty of room and access to their needs (food, water, toilet), or plan to board them elsewhere.
Pet dander can accumulate on any soft surface. Vacuum thoroughly, including all carpets, furniture and other surfaces. Additionally, clean the clothes you will wear at the gathering to ensure any lingering dander is flushed out.
Fragrance
As you clean, avoid using cleaners with strong odors or fragrances, as these can also be a major trigger for allergies. Baking soda can effectively neutralize strong odors.
Have Medications Handy
Even with the most deliberate precautions, allergies can sometimes be unpredictable. If a guest has an allergic reaction, be prepared with a medicine cabinet stocked with antihistamines and pain relievers. Also, consider keeping a topical anti-itch cream on hand if you don’t already have one—these are very useful even in non-allergy situations.
