We were saddened about the passing of Joan Rivers. We would like to clear up a few issues from this article.

First, vocal cord biopsies are a safe procedure to be performed as an outpatient. In fact, the vast majority of these procedures are performed as an outpatient nationwide. Second, laryngospasm is a known complication to any stimulation of the vocal cords, including routine surgeries of all types. This is managed by our anesthesia staff at our facilities daily. Laryngospasm is usually a temporary issue that rarely leads to such horrible problems. Next, procedures are performed with the consent of the patient. If truly no consent was obtained for the biopsy, then there is certainly a legal issue there. Lastly, it is very difficult to determine what occurred in New York through the media. We would caution that a true review of the medical records would need to be done and we trust that this is underway.

Once again, we are saddened at the passing of Joan Rivers and wish comfort to those that loved and were inspired by her. If you have any questions regarding this issue, feel free to ask our physicians at your upcoming appointment.
